The “Complete” Beethoven

As friends visited Beethoven in his room during his final few months, he would often speak of his desire to continue working on some unfinished compositions, including a Tenth Symphony, an oratorio of Saul and David, and a String Quintet.

After Beethoven died, Anton Diabelli acquired some sketches of the String Quintet, arranged them for piano, inexplicably disposed of the sketches, and published the result as “Ludwig van Beethoven’s Last Musical Thoughts”.
